West Wendover Issues First Marriage Licenses
In May of 2017 Charles Wall proposed to Tessah Smith both of whom reside in Salt Lake City, Utah. Tessah wanted to be married in West Wendover, Nevada. So, with rings in hand Tessah and Charles began to plan their wedding. Charles stated everything was going well until Tessah made a call inquiring about the marriage license. To their disappointment they found out that the City did not have the authority to issue marriage licenses and they would need to go to the Elko County Clerk’s Office in Elko, Nevada, which was an additional two hour drive west of West Wendover.
…Fast forward to 2018
After more than a year of working with various Elko County Officials including the Elko County Clerk, City Council Member Jasie Holm was finally able to secure the approval for the City of West Wendover to issue marriage licenses; a struggle which has been something ongoing for more than a decade.
With the calendar flipping to February 2018 and the approvals with Elko County and the appropriate computer system now in place at West Wendover City Hall things were ready and the City initiated a marketing program to promote the new availability of marriage licenses now in West Wendover. Coincidentally at that same time while Tessah was listening to 93.3 K-Bull radio station she heard that West Wendover would start issuing marriage licenses on February 14, 2018… none other than Valentine’s Day.
Tessah was excited and set out that her and Charles would be the first to get their marriage license in West Wendover. Charles was happy saying, “My bride had her dream come true”.
Charles and Tessah were issued the very first marriage license in West Wendover on Valentine’s Day 2018 at around 9:30am. They were subsequently married by West Wendover Mayor Daniel Corona in front of Wendover Will who said, “This is an exciting day, and a day of first’s…not only is this the first marriage where a license was issued by the City but the first marriage in front of Wendover Will and the first marriage as the Mayor of West Wendover I have been able to perform, I look forward to performing many more.” What a great Valentine’s Day!
The City of West Wendover, through the generous contributions of local business are providing the first 10 couples who receive marriage licenses with gift baskets that include gift cards, spirits, free meals, movie passes and free accommodations at local resorts, as well as some great Wendover Will memorabilia.
When asked about today’s events, City Manager Chris Melville said, “Most importantly the City wants to give our best wishes to our first newlyweds, Charles and Tessah Wall of Salt Lake City, Utah. Thanks for making our City and Wendover Will your choice as the place to celebrate the love you have for each other in such a wonderful way. Congratulations!”
